Tips to Avoid Some of the Most Dodgy Movers Out ThereTips to Avoid Some of the Most Dodgy Movers Out There

When you’re transport furniture, it’s important to choose a reputable company that will take care of your belongings. Unfortunately, there are some dodgy movers out there who might try to take advantage of you. We’ve all heard stories from A Current Affair, 7News and even warnings from consumer watchdogs. The moving and transport industry in Australia is overwhelmed with the increasing number of movers who cut corners, overcharge, late or do not arrive at all and in some cases, even damage your furniture.

Some of these stories show how unregulated the moving industry has become and outline the importance of buyer beware.

Rougue Melbourne removalist My Moovers who operate nationally has been issued three public warnings from state consumer watchdogs. The Office of Fair Trading released a public warning on 18 December 2020 and advised consumers to avoid engaging Ajanvi Pty Ltd, trading as My Moovers and Saka Qld Pty Ltd trading as My Moovers Qld. Consumer Affairs Victoria and Consumer Protection Western Australia have also made similar public warnings which relate to allegations My Moovers has continued to act in breach of the Australian Consumer Law.  The Office of Fair Trading received 68 complaints from consumers whilst CPWA received 47 complaints relating to movers arriving much later than scheduled or not turning up at all, overcharging, damaging furniture, demand for additional payment to complete the job and failing to complete the job.

In another case, dodgy removalist Apex Logistics owned by businessman Shivesh Kuksal held customer belongings ransom and demanded more money than quoted before delivering goods. When customers refused to pay, he would keep their furniture and they were threatened by legal firms that were also owned by Kuksal. Little did customers know, these legal firms were allegedly not registered to practice. Kuksal has a pending case to be heard before the courts, he was previously charged by VICPOL over the theft of over $100,000 worth of furniture contents belonging to customers who hired Apex Logistics for their furniture move.

Moving Review recommend following some of the following tips to avoid hiring dodgy furniture movers:

  • Check their credentials. Make sure the transport company is accredited with the Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA). This means they’ve met strict industry standards and have insurance coverage.
  • Shop around and compare quotes.
  • See what others are saying about them, check reviews on Google and social media.
  • Check the fine print and confirm what is included and ask about charges you are unware of.
  • In the event of delays, check if storage costs would incur and the associated prices.
  • Ask about the insurance they offer and what it covers.
  • Consult your insurance company and consider transit insurance and damage cover.
  • Avoid movers who request payment upfront or large deposits.

If you had dealings with a dodgy removalist or need to lodge a complaint about a removalist, you can contact the ACCC or contact the relevant consumer protection agency.

Removalist Company Sold Off Elderly couple’s home contents in devastating bungleRemovalist Company Sold Off Elderly couple’s home contents in devastating bungle

How would you feel if you had 60 years of furniture and belongings just disappear one day? Gone without a trace.

This is a devastating story of life long couple Gary and Lorraine Taylor, when they moved interstate from Queensland to Bega in New South Wales, and contracted the job to well known moving companies. They never would’ve known that it would be the last time they see most of their furniture.

The Taylor’s who are retired and aged in their late 70s had moved from Queensland to Bega, in NSW in need of a tree change to spend the rest of their retirement days.

However, little did the couple know that the moving service they hired to transport their furniture and possessions across border made a huge bungle and sold off their belongings in an online auction. Kent Removals & Storage blamed the costly mistake came down to human error. It all started when the original moving company Wridgeways the couple had hired, went into administration and Kent Removals & Storage took over the clients and was also assisting the liquidator Hall Chadwick to sell off Wridgeways assets. It was then, the error occurred which saw a container filled with the Taylor’s belongings being sent to online auction, where everything was sold off.

The Taylor’s are now fighting for compensation but a lawyer says the process won’t be cheap and they will need to come up with $50,000 to help recover some of their items.

According to Gary Taylor, among the things were his $28,000 rug, which was sold off for just $200, and $120,000 worth of furniture, all of which he would likely never see again.

The couple couldn’t believe how their world would be turned upside down, what makes it more difficult is that some of their furniture that had more than one piece split between the two moving containers. This made it difficult to assemble furniture that did arrive, rendering it close to useless.

Inside the Bega house, which has empty walls and is still full of boxes, there are stacks of couch cushions without frames and a vanity table without its mirror.

‘We’ve been married for 60 years, and 60 years of our bloody furniture has just gone down the tube, and nobody cares,’ Gary said in an interview with a news outlet.

On the other hand, as his wife, Lorraine, recalled the event, she choked back tears as she said it was ‘very hard to describe’.

‘It’s not believable what we’ve been through,’ she said. ‘It’s been terrible for both of us and for our family.’

This truck was delivered by mistake to the online auction house Grays Online, where everything was sold at a fraction of its worth. Credit: 7News.

Kent Removals & Storage CEO Steve Alves said in a statement: ‘Due to human error, one of the containers containing the effects belonging to Mr and Mrs Taylor was incorrectly sent to Grays Online for sale of the goods.’

Alves claimed the case had been forwarded to Kent’s insurers but that ‘the matter was incorrectly internalised between Kent, Grays Online and Hall Chadwick with a view to establishing liability for this error’.

‘As Kent Relocation Group contracted with Mr and Mrs Taylor and, irrespective of where the liability resides, Kent Relocation Group could and should have taken a lead role in this process and did not.’

‘Our team will focus on ensuring we support Mr and Mrs Taylor in any way we can to bring closure to this matter for them,’ Alves continued.

‘In terms of the missing items, given the quantum of the potential claim, the matter has been referred to Kent’s insurers along with an instruction to ensure that the matter is expedited in a prompt, efficient and reasonable manner for Mr and Mrs Taylor’.

Since the situation has become more serious, Alves promised that Kent Removals & Storage will strive to return 100% of the moving charges. To date, only 40% of the moving fees have been reimbursed.

The Taylors now have to wait for the companies’ insurance process to finish to find out if they will get any form of compensation due to the unimaginable mix up.

This is truly remarkable how this could have occurred from a reputable removalist company that has been in the business for decades. With the right processes in place, this would not have happened and it is just unfortunate that a retired couple had to bear the brunt of this aftermath. Let’s hope the situation is quickly sorted out for the Taylor’s so they can look forward to enjoying their retirement.
